Perché correre? - Running why?

Quel correrti dietro affannoso e vano
mi affatica il cuore e l'anima,
giacchè mai tu volgi lo sguardo indietro
per vedere se ti sto raggiungendo.
Perchè affannarsi a correre,
se tu avanzi inesorabile e cinica,
sperando che io casco e mi fermo?

It strains the heart and soul,
as ever you turn your gaze back
to see if I'm reaching you
Why scramble to run,
if you proceed inexorable and cynic,
hoping that I fall and stop?
